Excellence in Bible-Based Education

Curriculum

MMCS students are taught with both the ABeka and Bob Jones curriculum, which allows the children to read early in their kindergarten year and get excellence in education from a Christian perspective (that’s actually ABeka’s tagline). The knowledge of Jesus Christ is instilled in the kids from the very beginning of their schooling at MMCS. The students also have art, gym, science lab, SEL (Social Emotional Learning), and music weekly along with chapel monthly.

Hard work = Results!

Hard work = Results! Our students consistently score beyond their grade level on the Iowa Basic Skills test given yearly. In the 2012-2013 school year, the student body scored in the 97th percentile overall across the USA! In recent years, our students continue their ranking in the 90's percentile.

Preschool

MMCS offers two preschool programs:

  1. Monday, Wednesday, Friday Session (9 AM -11:30 AM OR 12:15-2:45 PM). This program is for 4- and 5-year-old children.
  2. Tuesday/Thursday (9 AM-11:30 AM OR 12:15-2:45 PM). This program is for potty-trained 3-year-old children.

As part of the preschool curriculum, the following activities are done on a continuing basis:

Social interaction: Students will be encouraged to make choices concerning how they would like to play during playtime. Play gives the children an excellent opportunity to develop language and social stills, aids in motor control and promotes sharing.

Name Recognition: When the children arrive in the morning, they will find their name and place it on our classroom tree. Other activities throughout the year will be done to reinforce this skill.

Listening Skills: The children will play games and do other activities that promote listening. It is important to listen to directions, while others are talking, and at story time.

Following Directions: Every day we work on following simple directions. It may be one or more requests such as, line up to wash your hands, close your glue etc. Also, when we do a project, we will ask them to use certain colors or follow the correct steps.

Small Motor Skills: Learning to hold a crayon and color neatly is necessary in order to learn to hold a pencil and write their name. Also, good exercises are tracing, lacing, and using glue.

Self -Help Skills: This is the basis of good self-esteem. When children are confident that they can take care of everyday tasks, they feel better about themselves. We will also ask them to help clean up after playtime, snack, and when making crafts.

Pre-Kindergarten Skills: (M-W-F class only) – Throughout the school year we will work on many skills needed for kindergarten. Along with the skills previously mentioned are a review of colors and shapes, recognizing and printing numbers 1 -10, counting to 20, recognizing letters and their sounds, and printing their first names correctly.

Program Includes: Bible stories and Scripture memorization, Introduction to letters A-Z, numbers 1-20, colors and shapes, art, music, games, gross and fine motor skills development, Mid-session snack (provided by parents), thematic units, special programs and parties.

Class size: There will be no more than 18 children in any class, a teacher / student ratio of 1:9

Elementary

Mount Moriah Christian School uses a combination curriculum which includes the A Beka Curriculum and Bob Jones, both nondenominational Christian curriculums, and Scott-Foresman. A Beka and Bob Jones are accelerated curriculums which provide academic challenge. Subject areas include math, reading, science/health, Bible, and social studies/history, and these subjects are taught by the classroom teachers. Students in grades K-8 also receive instruction in art, music, science lab, SEL (Social Emotional Learning), and physical education outside of their regular classroom. Students in 6th-8th grades are offered additional electives such as Christian Leadership, Cooking, & more!

We participate in an annual standardized testing program to ensure that our students are meeting national standards of academics. Our students typically score within or above grade level in all areas.

Each week a folder is sent home with weekly information as well as a monthly calendar, lunch forms, and student papers. Monthly reports are sent home with all students to inform parents of their child’s progress in each subject area. Parents are welcome to schedule phone conferences or meetings with the teacher at any time during year.

While we may not be a match for every student, we have in our school family children with learning difficulties. We do our best to modify, adapt and structure our lessons to meet the needs of all children in our class. We also offer help in math and speech from the Intermediate Unit. Several classes have aides which permit one on one instruction when needed.

Middle School

Mount Moriah’s middle school uses Abeka curriculum for math and Bob Jones University for reading, language arts, science, and history. Additionally, we teach Bible, Health, Music, and Art. We use additional supplementary materials that we feel best help reinforce the concepts presented.

In addition to our core subjects, middle school students are offered a variety of electives including Foods Class, Tech Ed, Christian Leadership, Advanced Art, and more!

Iowa Tests are given to the students in either the month of April or May each year. Seventh grade students are given a pre-Algebra test to determine their readiness for Algebra in the 8th grade.
